The Enlisted Association of the National Guard of Utah (EANGUT) is a military organization composed of soldiers and airmen. Traditional guardsmen hold a full-time civilian occupation while serving part-time as a National Guardsman.

One of the EANGUT members, U.S. Army SGT Devon Murphy, a Judge Advocate General noncommissioned officer with the Utah Army National Guard for the State Judge Advocate utilizes his military experience to enhance his capabilities for his civilian profession.

As the former Veteran and Military Constituent Liaison, and current Military Legislative Assistant in Rep. Bishop’s office SGT Murphy has witnessed the impact of federal policy on the lives of service members.  “The Army ingrained in me a dedication to public service and a lifelong interest in helping veterans,” said SGT Murphy. “I believe in Congress and in the ability of our country to make a lasting impact in the lives of those in uniform, veterans, and the entire country.

Serving as the Military Legislative Assistant, he is responsible for the workload management of nearly 50 diverse military and veterans’ cases. “I worked directly with the National Guard Bureau to resolve issues related to discharges, retirement, and awards,” said Murphy.  “I understand the inquiry process from the congressional side.”

SGT Murphy assists soldiers preparing for mobilization with wills, powers of attorney, and preparation for Utah Code Military Justice (UCMJ) action. He liaisons between unit commanders and the SJA.

In his current civilian position as Military Legislative Assistant, he works with the House Armed Services Committee on the National Defense Authorization Act on legislative initiatives aimed at benefiting military members and their families preserving military readiness. He also performs research as the Congressman’s advisor on the military, defense, national/homeland security, and veteran-related issues. He often meets with lobbyists, advocacy groups and active-duty military commanders in UT-01, to stay informed about issues that affect our district and Hill AFB.

Serving as the liaison to many veterans’ service organizations, he can maintain close connections to veteran advocacy groups and those on military installations working tirelessly for those who have served. “The constituents of UT-01 have benefitted significantly from my understanding of UCMJ as they come to our office for assistance with discharge reclassifications and enlistment waivers,” said Murphy.
